Is the TSA Still Operating During the Government Shutdown? Here’s What Travelers Should Know.

If you’re heading to the airport during the current government shutdown, you can rest assured that airport security is still running as usual. For now, there’s no need to worry about any major disruptions.

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is continuing operations because of the resilience of its staff — roughly 61,000 employees who are classified as essential workers. Despite their paychecks being temporarily on hold, they are committed to their duty. Once the shutdown ends and government funding is restored, these dedicated employees typically receive back pay.

In a statement on social media, the agency assured travelers that it “will continue operations to keep the traveling public safe,” though about 3,000 non-essential staff have been temporarily furloughed.
So what does that mean for travelers? In the short term, not much should change. Flights are still taking off, security checkpoints are staffed, and the TSA expects to continue screening roughly 2.5 million passengers a day.

The concern, however, is what happens if the shutdown drags on. In past shutdowns, unpaid TSA and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) employees began calling out sick, leading to longer lines, flight delays, and general airport chaos. Airlines for America, a trade group representing major carriers, warned that “When federal employees who manage air traffic, inspect aircraft, and secure our aviation system are furloughed or working without pay, the entire industry and millions of Americans feel the strain.”

While travelers shouldn’t expect major disruptions just yet, it’s crucial to stay updated. Keep an eye on your flight status, check TSA wait time updates, and pack a little extra patience just in case this shutdown lingers longer than expected. Being prepared is the best defense against potential disruptions.
Other areas of travel impacted by the government shutdown include national parks, which may have limited services or be completely closed; passport processing times, which may be delayed; and Smithsonian museums, which are currently closed. It’s important to consider these factors when planning your trip.
