Italy may be known for its delicious cuisine, gorgeous landscapes, and historic sites. Still, the U.S. State Department is urging American travelers to stay informed and exercise increased caution when visiting this popular vacation spot.

The updated travel advisory raises the risk for Italy to Level 2 due to the possibility of “terrorist violence, including terrorist attacks and other activity.”

It does not tell Americans to avoid traveling to Italy.

Still, the State Department recommends that visitors stay alert, monitor local news, and keep updated with information from the U.S. Embassy to feel more prepared and confident during their trip.

Terrorism isn’t the only safety concern mentioned in the advisory.

Petty crime, including pickpocketing, purse snatching, and car break-ins, is common in popular tourist areas and on public transportation, particularly trains.

The State Department says most crimes against foreigners are crimes of opportunity, while “violent crimes are rare.”

Travelers should also be aware of potential natural disasters such as volcanic activity, which can help them feel more prepared and in control of their safety.

Italy has nine volcanoes, including Mount Etna in Sicily, which erupted in August and sent an ash plume into the surrounding region. The eruption temporarily halted flights at Vincenzo Bellini Catania Airport and disrupted some flights as far away as Malta.

The Government of Canada also recently updated its travel information for Italy, warning about hazards associated with the country’s volcanoes. Its advisory specifically notes that periods of increased volcanic activity can cause ash fall, earthquakes, and the release of harmful gases.

The State Department recommends that Americans traveling internationally enroll in its free Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP).

The program provides safety updates and can provide emergency information, including evacuation details when necessary.

The State Department’s travel advisories follow a four-tier structure: Level 1: exercise normal precautions; Level 2: exercise increased caution; Level 3: reconsider travel; Level 4: do not travel.

Italy isn’t the only European tourist hot spot on the Level 2 list.

Other popular countries with that designation include France, Spain, the United Kingdom, and Germany.

While traveling in Italy, tourists should stay updated by checking official scientific monitoring sites.

Check the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) for real-time seismic data.
