Many Black residents of Broward County are beginning to wonder if Broward County Commissioners are trying to destroy the Broward County Sheriff’s Office under its first Black appointed, then elected, Sheriff, Gregory Tony.
Little by little, brick by brick, department by department and city by city, Broward Commissioners are dismantling the Sheriff’s Office’s authority.
The latest move is the Commission voting to strip the Sheriff of authority to provide emergency medical services to Broward County residents and visitors.
They also want to strip the Sheriff of authority over the seaport and the airport.
BSO service at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport has a 93% rating, and the seaport is similar.
The rating is based solely on the agency’s response time inside the airport and conflict resolution.
Sheriff Gregory Tony, who is very egotistical, has been a thorn in the Commissioners’ side for quite a spell.
Broward County Commissioner Mark Bogen On A Mission, Turned Away From Sheriff's Office Building.
The commissioners want Tony to submit to them; however, he’s not built that way. So, there is a clash of wills.
Greg Tony says he is a constitutionally elected official, so he doesn’t have to bow to them.
He answers the voters the same way they do.
However, the Commissioners control the purse strings. They decide who gets what, and when and where to use it.
Commissioner Mark Bogen walking into a gymnasium to look at the equipment isn’t trimming useless fat unless you’re going to work out.
That’s plain harassment and childish.
As a Broward County Commissioner, Bogen should have the right to walk into the common area of any county building during operating hours, not an employee’s office.
So a budget battle for the Sheriff’s office has turned into a battle over who can access BSO’s luxury gym.
After turning away Commissioner Mark Bogen, BSO allowed local news station Channel 10 access to the gym.
After all, it is a public building that should be open to the public.
And that doesn’t mean the public has access to restricted areas of the building.
Some public buildings have areas employees can’t access.
They can trim a lot of fat.
One has to know where to find it.
Some fat is good.
The dangerous fat that Bogen wants to trim is the visceral fat, buried deep in the crevices of the organs and sinews.
It’s like the fat buried inside a gallon of cow’s milk with protein.
Over time, the former is unhealthy; the latter, properly distributed, is “good.”
Getting rid of the fat would affect the entire body; it should benefit the taxpayers, but it won’t.
The body will begin to rebel against its owner, and some excess appendages will fall off, which is a good thing.
Some expansion and growth is healthy. A bloated body is unhealthy.
The latest feud between Tony and the Commissioners shows Commissioner Mark Bogen trying to enter BSO’s main building on Broward Blvd. and NW 27th Avenue with news media in tow.
He was promptly denied access.
The situation is shaping up to look like that of President Trump denying access to certain “fake news” media outlets at the White House.
Commissioner Bogen said he wanted to inspect the ‘luxury gym’ Tony built on the second floor of BSO headquarters.
As the Commissioners attempt to push BSO out of Broward County International Airport,
is a fight shaping up between a Napoleon and a Goliath?
At one point, many suspected the Broward Commissioners were grooming Tony’s second-in-command (Colonel Nicole Anderson) to overthrow him. Sheriff Tony exercised his right to be paranoid and fired her forthwith.
When Tony fired Ms. Anderson, he highlighted his record of firing 200 deputies during his seven-year tenure at the head of the agency.
Broward is Florida’s 2nd most populous county, with nearly 2 million residents, and the Broward Sheriff’s Office (BSO) is the largest Sheriff’s office in the state.
The fight between Sheriff Gregory Tony and the Broward County Commissioners stems from a long-standing rivalry between BSO and Tony, who Republican Governor Ron DeSantis first selected for the job.
Colonel Nicole Anderson was also a first for Napoleon Bonaparte Broward.
She was the first Black woman to rise to the rank of colonel in the agency.
Broward County prides itself on being a Blue State, meaning most residents tend to vote for democratic candidates during partisan elections.
Broward County does have its fair share of die-hard Republicans.
Dade County, Florida’s most populous county, is considered Red County.
In his last election, Sheriff Tony ran as a Democrat.
And he won.
Some people suspect that he is a closet Republican.
Sheriff Greg Tony may be a chameleon.
On Tuesday, 10-13-2026, the Broward County commissioners ganged up on Tony and voted unanimously to take legal action against his office.
