At a time when Americans are calling on Congress to cease from “Insider Trading,” a set of Congressmen found one of their own guilty of fraud.

Now, ain’t that the kettle calling the pot white?

House Ethics Committee finds indicted Dem Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick guilty on 25 counts of breaking campaign finance laws.

The Department of Justice (DOJ) alleges that Sheila Cherfilus McCormick was involved in money laundering and made illegal campaign contributions.

If Cherfilus-McCormick is convicted, she faces up to 53 years in prison.

The 47-year-old Democrat has been in office since 2022, when she won the late Rep. Alcee Hastings’ seat in a special election.

In 1979, the same year that Sheila Cherfilus was born, President Jimmy Carter nominated Alcee Hastings to the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida.

In 1981, the FBI charged Federal Judge Hastings with conspiracy to solicit a bribe.

When the FBI charged 46-year-old Alcee Hastings with bribery, native New Yorker Sheila Cherfilus was only two years old.

Two Worlds Coincide / Hastings and Cherfilus-McCormick

Who knew that a little girl from New York would one day grow up to challenge a Congressman for his seat?

Rep. McCormick challenged a Congress that, as a federal judge, the Senate once impeached and removed from his office.

Who knew that the same kid sitting in that old seat that she craved would find herself being impeached by Congress?

At his criminal trial, a jury acquitted Judge Hastings of his bribery charges.

However, in 1988, the United States House of Representatives impeached Hastings for bribery and perjury.

In October 1989, the United States Senate found Alcee Hastings guilty and removed him from office.

The Senate removed Hastings from the bench but did not bar him from holding public office in the future.

In 1992, Alcee Hastings Won His Seat In Congress.

In 1992, when former federal judge Alcee Hastings won his seat in Congress, the Cherfilus family also moved from New York to Florida.

In November 2025, the DOJ indicted 46-year-old Rep. Shiela Cherfilus-McCormick and charged her with stealing $5 million of FEMA funds.

Rep. Cherfilus McCormick told the press that she was not guilty as charged. The evidence stacked up against Cherfilus-McCormick doesn’t look very promising for her.

Especially, after her colleagues in Congress found her guilty of 25 of the 27 charges levied against her.

Rep. Cherfilus-McCormick’s supporters believe Congress should have waited for the DOJ case to go to trial before publicly chastising her.

In the case of Alcee Hastings, they allowed the criminal trial to proceed before they impeached him.

Alcee Hastings Had Pedigree

Alcee Hastings was the first black federal judge in the history of the state of Florida.

Hastings participated in many civil rights demonstrations and was arrested six times for his struggles for equal rights for Black Americans.

In 2018 and 2020, when Sheila Cherfilus McCormick challenged incumbent Alcee Hastings for his District 20 seat, she came up against a

against incumbent Alcee Hastings in the August 28, 2018, primary.

She later ran against him again in 2020, taking on a stalwart in the Black community.

Cherfilus-McCormick lost the 2018 and 2020 races against Hastings 73.6%–26.4% and 69.3%–30.7%, respectively.

Rep. Jim Himes: A Horse of The Same Color.

Rep. Sheila Cherfilus McCormick is up for reelection in November. Once again, she faced her old nemesis, Dale Holness.

Holness is a Democratic former Broward County Commissioner.

However, the Democrats are currently looking to push candidates who are more malleable, non-thinkers, and prone to unthinkingly following orders.

Rep. Shiela Cherfilus-McCormick‘s political future is in the balance. Even politicians who are on the take are calling for Rep. Cherfilus to resign from Congress.

On Sunday, Rep. Jim Haimes also called for Rep. Cherfilus McCormick to step down from her seat. Minority Speaker Jeffery Hakeem remains in the embattled Representative’s corner.

“Cherfilus-McCormick is a member of the Congressional Black Caucus. She serves on the Committee on Foreign Affairs and the Committee on Veterans’ Affairs.”
