At about 8:35 p.m., Secret Service agents shot and killed a man who tried to rush the WHCD, where President Trump was in attendance.

In attendance at the high-profile event were President Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and several members of Trump’s cabinet.

Also in attendance were the White House press corps and a slew of dignitaries.

The last time the President attended the White House Correspondents’ Dinner was in April 2015. Trump is not a big fan of the annual gala.

After the person attempted to breach the inner perimeter of the building, the Secret Service promptly shot the person to secure the area.

The Secret Service agents secured the President and other officials and immediately removed them from the building.

UPDATE:

President Trump gives an update on the shooting incident at the WHCD. The Secret Service took one known subject into custody. His condition is unknown.

A volunteer and witness at the event, Helen Mabus, described for reporters what she heard and saw.

According to Mabus, the alleged shooter hid in a makeshift storage room near the ballroom where the guests were.

“He was in that room […] he grabbed it out of a bag or something,” Mabus said, adding that the weapon “was long” and “didn’t look like a typical gun.”

“Mabus said the suspect was partially out of view of security as he handled the weapon inside the room before suddenly moving toward the main event space.” — Reuters.

President Trump ordered that the event be rescheduled within the next 30 days.

The story continues to develop.
