A Davie cop, Sherlock Holmes, sleuth or slut arrested a Black man based on Florida’s new license plate frame law, which is ambiguous and rooted in discretion.

On an ambiguous law rooted in discretion, who do you think would be the first to get arrested under such a law? And which South Florida police department would be the first to use it against a Black person?

As you guessed, an African American would be the first to get arrested under that law. And 2), the horse-riding town of Davie would be most likely to arrest a Black person using the law as an excuse to ruin his life. This highlights the legal ambiguity and potential for misuse, prompting legal professionals and community members to question fairness. At the time of his arrest, Demarquize Dawson was driving a rental car.

Yes, it happened. Just two months after the “discretionary” law went into effect, a law enforcement cop who was ignorant of the law arrested a Black man. Upon arresting 32-year-old Demarquize Dawson, the officer explained his “reason” for making the arrest.

“I’m arresting you because the first ‘S’ on your license plate in the “Sunshine State” is partially covered by the frame,” Major Ignoramous told Dawson.

Interpretation of The Officer’s Statement?

I’m arresting you because I’m a bored bonehead who is ignorant of the law.” Plus, I like arresting Ni**ers. I hate you guys. I hate you all.

This incident underscores the importance of law enforcement training and awarenesswhich community members and advocates should be attentive to.

“Ignorance of The Law is no excuse for breaking the law.” Right!

The police and prosecutors always tell the public that ‘ignorance of the law is no excuse for breaking the law.’ Thus, a violator of a ‘law’ is either ticketed, arrested, or prosecuted. So, what happens when a law enforcement officer is ignorant of the law and violates the law? Nothing. So then the argument that ‘Ignorance of the law is no excuse for breaking the law’ becomes void. They will use qualified immunity to justify the dumb Davie cop breaking the law and getting away with no consequences.

After arresting Mr. Dawson, Davie Police checked with the Florida Chiefs of Police Association for clarification. Following their meeting with the Florida Chiefs of Association, the Davie Police Department released a statement of clarification of the Rep. Tom Fabricio (R-Miami Lakes) and Sen. Ana Maria Rodriguez (R-Doral/Homestead) “law.”

Davie PD: “At the initial release of this updated law, the wording was vague, unclear, and appeared to be open for misinterpretation.” Since the release of a memo by the Florida Chiefs of Police Association was provided to our department, our officers are educated on the application and the use of this new statute.” Police officers must be able to read license plates and identify the state of registration. The decal, license plate numbers, and letters on the license plate must be legible. If a Florida cop cannot tell what a Florida license plate looks like, then his supervisors should give him a “random.”

Meanwhile, every time Demarquize Dawson goes for a job, he has to explain his arrest record to his prospective employer. And that is if the employer takes the time to seek an explanation, or just tosses his application based on his arrest.

Floridians expected an ignorant arrest based on the enhanced law to come from either the Davie PD or the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office. The Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office is known for several shootouts. They’re quick to shoot at acorns and Unicorns.

After spending the night in jail, the victim of the Town of Davie Police, Demarquize Dawson, went to the hospital for treatment of PTSD. Demarquize Dawson, through his attorney, said they plan on suing the Davie PD.
