United Airlines has increased checked baggage fees, becoming the latest U.S. carrier to do so amid rising operating costs.

The Chicago-based airline confirmed the changes in an April 2 statement, noting that the new pricing applies to tickets purchased on or after April 3 for travel within the U.S., Mexico, Canada, and Latin America.

This new price increase marks the first time United has raised bag fees in two years.

For travelers who pay for checked luggage within 24 hours of departure, the cost of a first checked bag rose from $40 to $50, while the cost of a second bag increased from $50 to $60.

The fee for a third checked bag jumped from $150 to $200.

Passengers who choose to prepay for their bags online will still receive a slight discount, though those prices are also increasing.

The price of a first checked bag went from $35 to $45, the second from $45 to $55, and the third bag will also cost $200.

Despite the changes, some travelers will continue to receive free checked baggage. United confirmed that MileagePlus Premier members, United Chase credit card holders, active military personnel, and customers flying in premium cabins will remain exempt from these fees.

United’s decision follows a similar move by JetBlue, which recently announced its own baggage fee increases.

JetBlue cited rising oil prices linked to the war in Iran as a contributing factor. Under its new pricing, the first checked bag will increase from $35 to $39.

Passengers who pay for checked luggage less than 24 hours before departure should expect an additional $10 fee.

In a statement, JetBlue said it regularly reviews costs and adjusts optional service fees, such as checked baggage, while working to keep base fares competitive and maintain its onboard offerings.
