Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick steps down from Congress amid fraud charges.

During the House Ethics Committee deliberations on the fate of Congresswoman Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, she stepped down. Cherfilus-McCormick’s resignation reflects the committee’s efforts to uphold integrity.

In light of the resignations of Representatives Eric Swalwell and Tony Gonzales, a Democrat and a Republican, respectively, Cherfilus-McCormick resigned before the hammer came down.

The handwriting was written in bold letters on the wall; her colleagues were looking to make a statement and clear their names.

Rep. Eric Swalwell resigned from his seat and a shot at becoming California’s next governor in 2027 after a former staffer claimed he raped her, raising awareness of accountability in such serious allegations.

Swalwell admitted to having sex with the woman but said the encounter was consensual.

U.S. Representative Tony Gonzales (R-Texas) was also accused of engaging in a coercive sexual relationship with a subordinate staff member.
The staff member, Regina Santos-Aviles, who was married at the time of the affair, would later set herself on fire.
There are indications that Rep. Tony Gonzales pressured Santos-Aviles into the relationship.
Both Swalwell and Gonzales were married at the time of their affairs with their staffers.

In January 2026, Cherfilus-McCormick appeared in Miami federal court on charges that she stole $5 million in federal disaster relief funds.

The Representative did not enter a plea to the charges leveled against her during her time in the Federal court, which once tried Panama’s President Manuel Noriega.

Today, Rep. Cherfilus-McCormick sent House Speaker Mike Johnson a letter of resignation that reads in part, “After careful reflection and prayer, I have concluded that it is in the best interest of my constituents and the institution that I step aside at this time.”

“I remain committed to supporting a smooth transition and ensuring continuity of service for the district,” the letter states.

On March 27, the House Ethics Committee, a bipartisan 10-member panel, voted to find Cherfilus-McCormick “guilty” of 25 counts related to stolen FEMA funds.
