A new study aimed at keeping cruise lines’ customers healthy reveals the cleanest cruise lines.

From buffet lines and elevator buttons to pool decks and theater seats, cruise ships bring together thousands of travelers and crew members in countless shared spaces where germs can spread fast.
Cleanliness can play a major role in the onboard experience, with some cruise lines boasting a better performance history than others.

A recent study from travel insurance provider Square Mouth ranked Viking Ocean, Viking Expedition, and Crystal Cruises as the cleanest cruise lines in the U.S., each tied for the top spot after earning identical sanitation scores based on CDC inspection criteria, including water quality, sanitation practices, and onboard cleanliness standards.

The study reviewed Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) inspection reports collected between 2014 and 2025.
These inspections evaluate a wide range of onboard health and sanitation areas, including galleys, dining rooms, medical centers, potable water systems, heating and ventilation systems, pest management, swimming pools, housekeeping, and activity centers.
Squaremouth manually compiled the vessel sanitation scores and grouped ships by cruise line.

A New Study Reveals the Cleanest Cruise Lines.

According to a new study by the company, the CDC reported 23 onboard illness outbreaks last year, a 28% increase from 2024.
Norovirus, which causes vomiting and diarrhea, was the most commonly reported illness, linked to 17 of the 23 outbreaks in 2025.

It can spread through direct contact with an infected person, consuming contaminated food or drinks, or touching contaminated surfaces and then placing unwashed fingers in the mouth.

A new study shows to reduce the risk of illness while sailing, travelers should wash their hands frequently and avoid touching high-touch surfaces, such as condiment stations and beverage dispensers. Practicing good hand hygiene empowers travelers to protect their health on board actively.
