Some of the best fall foliage trips can be found beyond New England.
Fall is around the corner, so if you’re thinking of booking a leaf-peeping adventure, now is the time to plan.
And while Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine certainly deserve their fall foliage fame, they’re far from the only places to see spectacular autumn color.
If you’re seeking a fall trip, that’s more exclusive. Here are five destinations that stand shoulder to shoulder with New England.

1. Kyoto, Japan.

Kyoto, Japan. Japan’s fall foliage season is just as celebrated as its spring cherry blossoms. From late October to November, fiery maples illuminate Kyoto’s temples and gardens. For an unforgettable view, visit Kiyomizu-dera Temple or take a stroll along the Philosopher’s Path.

2. Julian Alps

Julian Alps, Slovenia. Slovenia is one of Europe’s best-kept secrets, and fall only adds to its charm. The Julian Alps and Lake Bled turn golden and crimson, creating postcard-perfect reflections. To make the most of your fall foliage viewing, consider taking a boat ride on Lake Bled or hiking to the top of Mount Triglav for a panoramic view. Hiking here in the fall also means cooler temps and fewer crowds compared to summer.

3. Colorado’s San Juan Mountains

Colorado’s San Juan Mountains The Rockies are famous for their aspen groves, which turn a brilliant yellow each fall.

Southwest Colorado—particularly around Telluride, Ouray, and Durango—offers jaw-dropping mountain drives framed by golden leaves and early-season snowcaps.

4. South Korea’s Seoraksan

South Korea’s Seoraksan National Park. One of Asia’s most dramatic leaf-peeping destinations, Seoraksan’s jagged peaks and forested valleys explode in color each October. The park is just a few hours from Seoul, making it a perfect side trip for travelers already visiting the city.

5. Bavaria, Germany

Bavaria, Germany Autumn in Bavaria means two things: beer festivals and blazing fall color. Don’t miss the opportunity to experience the local beer culture and traditional Bavarian dishes. The forests around Neuschwanstein Castle and the Bavarian Alps look like something straight out of a fairytale, with fiery leaves against snow-dusted peaks.

Travel Tip:

Many of these destinations peak later than New England—often late October into November—so travelers have a longer window to plan. Shoulder season also means you can enjoy these stunning destinations at a fraction of the cost, making fall one of the best times to go abroad.

Wherever you head this fall, keep your camera ready to capture the incredible beauty of these colorful destinations.
