On Monday, August 31, police arrested Lauderhill Vice Mayor Richard Campbell.
Campbell’s arrest stems from an August 3rd incident, where he allegedly attempted to escort a squatter from his home, leading to legal action.
It is not clear if the police allowed the home invader, who was once in an intimate relationship with the vice mayor, to stay in his home after the shoving match.
Campbell is on the November 3 ballot seeking a full four-year term, making the case’s timing politically significant.
He’s currently at the end of his second non-consecutive term on the Lauderhill Commission.
In an interview with WPLG Channel 10 News, the Vice Mayor said that “I’m not worried. The election is coming up, and this is an attempt to disrupt the election.”
Regarding the case, the Vice Mayor said it will play out in court, and the public will know the outcome.
Campbell seems to believe the accusation is an attempt to smear his name for political reasons.
A Broward County judge had Campbell remanded throughout Monday night.
After appearing in court on Tuesday with his attorney, the judge set the vice mayor’s bail at $7,500.
He was ordered to stay away from the squatter.
The Vice Mayor admitted that he was in a relationship with the squatter.
However, the relationship ended months ago, but she refused to vacate his home.
He claims that “Friends, family, and others begged the squatter to leave, but to no avail.”
During the Lauderhill meeting scheduled for Monday, Mayor Denise Grant said a prayer for Campbell.

The Vice Mayor’s arrest came after he allegedly tried to have someone contact the squatter to drop a restraining order against him.
Campbell states that he was not aware there was a restraining order against him.
Campbell, a Physical Therapist, faces a major challenge from Dr. Mary Smith for Seat #4.
Dr. Smith says her ‘priorities are leadership, community, and transparency.’ She said she wants stronger leadership for a stronger Lauderhill.
